Can I Do It Myself ?

The simple and quick answer is that most of us can grab a pencil, a piece of paper and start drawing some shit. The problem is that not all of us can draw well enough to attract somebody’s attention. The web design process takes more than just drawing. You’ll need many more skills in order for your website to work and be found by people.

How hard is it to design a website ?

Sure, if you have time on your hands you can learn anything, the sky is the limit. Nowadays you don’t even need to learn how to code from the scratch. CMS platforms like WordPress make it much easier. It’s a little bit like cooking. You don’t need to grow your own food. You can buy ingredients in Tesco’s and cook for yourself. And if you are really good at this you can open a restaurant and create a great menu for a bigger audience. In the same way, you can upload WordPress to a server, learn HTML, CSS, PHP, SEO, a little bit of marketing skills and you are done. CMS platforms like WIX are even easier. They are like pre packaged ready to eat meals. All you need to do is preheat your dinner in the microwave.

I’m being a little bit sarcastic here. Yes, there are instances where spending thousands of pounds on your web design will not be necessary and web design platforms like WIX will be all you need. With a little bit of effort and knowledge, one can even use them to make some projects a successful web presence.

But the reality is that web design process is not easy at all. Visual content is only a part of the website creation. The whole process is incredibly difficult, time-consuming and often takes more than one man to complete a successful project.

How Much Will It Cost Me ?

You say: My friend’s next-door-neighbor says he will make me a website in a week for like £300.

I’d say go for it. Not that you need to spend thousands of pounds on every project but if you get for this price an engaging web design that has a potential to end up ranking somewhere at the top of google search engine for popular key words, then I’d also say you probably won yourself a little jackpot.

Your friend’s next-door-neighbor is a genius. Apart from having the talent to make his vision attractive to people, he is also very good at PHP, MySQL, Javascript, On Page/Off page SEO, Cross-Browser Compatibility Integration, Proper Link Structuring, UX, UI, Web Application Security, custom email and server configuration and a bunch of other components that you will need to make your web project successful.

Web Design Process

The whole process starts with obtaining details about your project. It is nothing more than meeting or communicating in some other way to discuss your ideas and translate it to suitable and engaging web design for your market. “Suitable” is quite important here. Do you really need a retractable roof on your house just because you saw it on the Home Advisor? It’s really important here not to get carried away.

Gathering Components

In case you’re unfamiliar with the basics you will need to start with a domain name and a server that will host this domain. Domain name is the name you want to give to your website, eg. builderscleavage.com. A server is a machine that will host your domain name and connect it to the internet. Domain names and web hosting services are offered by a vast number of companies and are easily obtained throughout the internet. If you have these basics already covered and you already bought your domain name and a server space, you also chose the right hosting for your needs, and you have your FTP details ready for your web designer.

Unless you are providing website content (copy writing text, images, logos) your web designer or a member of their team will need to spend quite a bit of time analysing your business. Specifics about your business and market competition will need to be studied in details in order to provide relevant and competitive website content.

Every web design starts with an idea that often needs to be blueprinted beforehand. This idea will either keep your audience engaged in your web content or make them move onto your competition’s website. What separates an average design from exceptional design is an unwavering attention to usability and visual detail. Typography, colour, style, eye catching photography, usability, simplicity over complexity and vice versa – all these details are very important during web design process.

The next step would be drawing your concept with a bunch of code and making it functional. As much as your website look can subconsciously influence your visitor and keep him/her engaged in the visually attractive content, without functional design your project will probably never see your targeted visitors. A well-designed website should, first of all, encourage search engine robots to crawl your pages. Security, clean code practices, acceptable loading times, user-friendliness, accessibility, on page search engine optimisation… All these together with a few other factors will play a big role in your web design process.

Although Off Line SEO has nothing to do with technical web development, it is one of the most important elements for a successful website project. It includes backlinking which is an art itself (one of the most crucial elements), social media integration and many other marketing strategies. Many companies specifically specialise just in off line SEO.

The whole process, depending on complexity and the size of your project can take from 1-6 months or even more. That’s for someone who already knows what they’re doing. Can you design a website yourself ? Like someone once said.- “The sky is the limit”.
